Enjoy the confidence that motherhood can bring

There are few life experiences more transformative than becoming a mother. Some women find that the transformation begins when they develop a surge of confidence during pregnancy. Maybe it’s the power that comes from physically creating another human being or the shift in focus from oneself to another. But for some, pregnancy can be an empowering experience and a time of rapid self-growth.

Quit sweating the small stuff with your pregnancy

During your pregnancy, you may find that things you used to worry about don’t matter so much anymore. Accidentally sent the wrong file at work? Intelligence isn’t measured by the ability to attach files! Your colleagues still know how brilliant you are. The curtains you ordered for the nursery don’t quite reach the floor? Who cares – they still block out the morning sun. As long as baby is healthy (or you have a plan in place for any complications), the small stuff can suddenly seem less important. You’re still you, and a baby won’t eclipse all your problems. But this additional perspective can help you place more focus on the big picture.

Gain more confidence in your choices

Before, you were only responsible for yourself. Now, you’re responsible for two. There’s just no time or energy for ambivalence or endlessly seeking the approval of others. You may be surprised to find yourself putting your foot down on the things you want, from family names to to the guest list for the hospital, and the decision to bank your baby’s cord blood. Trust your instincts and revel in that newfound confidence. It looks good on you.

Develop extra compassion

Have you started developing a little more compassion for your own mother? There’s nothing like realizing what your own mom had to go through to bring you into the world. That feeling will likely deepen after baby is born. You may find yourself checking the crib again and again just to assure yourself that baby is okay. Suddenly, it’s understandable why Mom wanted you to check in after school and call her when you got home from the movies. That feeling of love and concern never fades.
